Co-Founder and CEO, On Second Thought
Maci Peterson is an entrepreneur and millennial marketing expert based in Washington, D.C. She is a recognized expert and adviser on entrepreneurship, millennial initiatives and messaging etiquette.
Maci is the cofounder and CEO of On Second Thought, the first messaging app that lets users take back text messages before they get to the other person's phone. She grew the company from having the initial idea to launching it on the international stage. She won first place for the idea of On Second Thought at Startup Oasis, UP Global and the Kauffman Foundation’s annual pitch competition at South by Southwest (SXSW). On Second Thought was a featured startup and ALPHA exhibitor at The Web Summit in Dublin in November 2014 and a showcased startup at 1776 in January 2015. Maci and the app have also been featured on The Huffington Post, BBC and in Essence Magazine (March 2015 issue). Maci has been named on Washington Business Journal’s 40 under 40 List.
Maci’s experience as an entrepreneur includes years of developing and promoting millennial initiatives. As a brand manager at Marriott International, Maci led the redevelopment and re-launch of the hospitality company’s first mobile game, Xplor. For this initiative, she managed relationships with companies including Hertz and Pepsi. She also led innovative digital marketing campaigns and consulted on many of the hotel company’s GenY initiatives. As the marketing strategist for The Root, a leading news, opinion and culture site for African American influencers, Maci led the company in taking protests from the streets to the tweets with the groundbreaking #MarchOn Twitter to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. She also planned numerous events, including the company’s signature The Root 100 Awards Dinner and The Root Inaugural Ball to celebrate the second inauguration of President Barack Obama.
Maci earned her bachelor of arts degree in public relations and advertising from Chapman University, with related work in journalism and advanced film production. While a student at Spelman College, she studied cultures of the African Diaspora and marketing. She was the founder and editor-in-chief of the former Mwari Magazine, a digital publication that discussed issues ranging from politics and world affairs to fashion, travel, and beauty to provide young, black women the necessary tools to become effective leaders in a global society. Additionally, she worked in product placement for 20th Century Fox, contributing to various films, including 27 Dresses, Marley & Me, Meet Dave, Juno and The Devil Wears Prada.
In 2010, Maci received the Tuxedo Ball’s Award for Entrepreneurship. She is a member of 1776 Incubator and the MindShare Class of 2015. She has been the invited speaker at a variety of leadership and business organizations and conferences, including the 2015 Fosterly Collaborate Conference, MoDev, and the Spelman College Women of Color Leadership Conference. Maci was profiled by BET News for its 2015 Women’s History Month series, and she was featured in a two page interview as “Tech’s Newest Innovator” in ESSENCE Magazine’s March 2015 issue.
Maci regularly serves as a mentor and leader for several community organizations. She is a founding board member of Michelle in Training and a former board member of New Light Leadership Coalition, Platform H and Carson Scholars Alumni. She is a former member of the National Association of Black Journalists, and an alumna of Alpha Phi Fraternity. In 2015, she was the honoree of the Distinction of Hope Award from Community of Hope AME Church, given to outstanding citizens who have helped move African American communities forward.
